Montezuma Castle National Monument is one of the best-preserved ancient cliff dwellings in North America—and despite the name, it has nothing to do with the Aztec emperor Montezuma.
A good stop for about an hour.
This remarkable structure was built by the Sinagua people around 1100–1400 CE. It’s a five-story, 20-room dwelling tucked into a limestone cliff about 100 feet above the ground. The elevated location helped protect it from flooding and potential threats.
