The island is divided into two parts: Sint Maarten (the southern Dutch part) and Saint-Martin (the northern French part). It is one great island with two totally different feels. The island is also known for the SXM airport. The airport is renowned for its runway’s proximity to Maho Beach, where planes fly extremely low over beachgoers during takeoff and landing, making it a popular spot for plane spotting and photography.
We spent time on a boat off the runway and still felt the blast from the jet engines while others cling to the fence. We took a boat ride around the island, so we had were fortunate to see the entire island from the water.
