Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

The Serengeti is so huge and has been voted the best park in Africa. We spent 3 nights in both the Northern Serengeti to see the Mara River crossing and the Central Serengeti to see 1000’s of animals. It did not disappoint. I have tried to group the animals together, rather than by day.

The Northern Serengeti is one of the park’s most dramatic and less crowded regions—famous above all for the Great Migration’s Mara River crossings. It offers a wilder, more remote safari compared to the central areas.

The Central Serengeti is the heart of Serengeti National Park and one of the most rewarding safari regions in all of Africa. It’s often the area visitors imagine when they think of the Serengeti’s endless plains filled with wildlife.

The “Big Five” usually refers to the five most iconic animals that people hope to see on safari in Africa. The term comes from old hunting days (these were considered the most difficult and dangerous animals to hunt on foot), but today it’s mainly used in wildlife tourism and photography.

  1. Lion
  2. Leopard 🐆 – Elusive, solitary, and often found resting in trees.
  3. Elephant
  4. Buffalo 🐃 – Cape buffalo, powerful and unpredictable, often in large herds.
  5. Rhinoceros 🦏 – Both black and white rhinos are included; critically endangered due to poaching.

Lions – We saw Lions almost everyday. The King of the Jungle.

Leopards are about the hardest animal to see. They are solitary and found in trees or rocks. They hide very well.

Elephants are found all over and these are just beautiful. The gentile giants.

Buffalo are about the most dangerous animals as they do not see well and tend to charge people. At night, they were outside our tent and we were told over and over, do not come out.

Rhinoceros are often times hard to find, but our guide was great and we were lucky.

Wildebeest, there are just so many. At times as far as the eye can see.

Zebra, no two Zebras have the same stripes.

Giraffe

Cheetah, we saw baby cheetah’s waiting for their mom to make the kill and provide food.

Hyena

Jackal

Crocodile

Mongoose

Monkey

Deer Family – There are so many different animals in the deer family, that we got confused, between the Impala, Topi, Dic Dic, Gazelle…..I have grouped them together here for the pictures.

Warthog

The Birds

We continued to glamp in all the Parks. There were animals outside all night.

During dinner, there was often a dance.

Driving, the drives were great, but so dusty and bumpy.

Sunrise and Sunsets are special, mostly due to the dust in the air.

The Mara River, so you can see the perspective of what the animals have to cross while avoiding the Crocs.
