Puno and the Floating Islands

The Uros built the most amazing floating islands and this day is certainly a must. It is difficult to get to Puno, we took a 9 hour bus ride to Puno, spent the night and then got on the boat to the islands. It was long, but well worth it. I wish I had brought some baseball caps, since many of the people on the island were wearing hats with logos from U.S. teams. They were given as gifts.

The Uros Islands, or Uros Floating Islands, are a unique and culturally significant attraction located on Lake Titicaca, which straddles the border between Peru and Bolivia. Here are key details about the Uros Islands:

  1. Floating Islands: The Uros Islands are artificial islands made entirely of totora reeds, which grow abundantly in Lake Titicaca. The islands are constructed by layering these reeds on top of one another, creating a buoyant platform that floats on the lake’s surface.
  2. Indigenous Culture: The Uros people, known as the Uru people, have lived on these islands for centuries. They originally constructed the islands as a defensive measure against rival tribes. Today, the Uros maintain their traditional way of life, relying on fishing, hunting, and tourism for sustenance.
  3. Unique Experience: Visiting the Uros Islands offers a glimpse into a distinctive way of life preserved through generations. Travelers can take guided tours to learn about the construction of the islands, interact with the Uros people, and explore their homes and handicrafts made from totora reeds.
  4. Location: The Uros Islands are located about 5 kilometers (3 miles) offshore from the city of Puno in southeastern Peru. Puno serves as the main access point for tours to the islands, with boats departing regularly from the city’s port.

The bus ride from Cusco to Puno had some amazing sites. We didn’t really like our tour guide for this one, but again, the ride passed thru some beautiful areas and the end was worth it.
