El Calafate is a town located in the Patagonian region of Argentina, renowned for its proximity to the spectacular Perito Moreno Glacier.
Gateway to Perito Moreno Glacier: El Calafate is most famous as the starting point for visiting the Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders in Patagonia. The glacier is part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and is known for its size, accessibility, and dynamic ice formations. It is also one of the few glaciers in the world that is currently growing in size. When you look at the glacier, you should realize that it is larger than the island of Manhattan. A truly spectacular site.
El Chalten
El Chaltén is a small and picturesque village nestled in the Argentine Patagonia, renowned as the hiking capital of Argentina. Here’s an overview of El Chaltén:
Location: El Chaltén is located within Los Glaciares National Park in the southern Patagonian region of Argentina. It sits at the base of the iconic Mount Fitz Roy and is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, pristine rivers, and ancient forests. I believe this is also the mountain used by the company Patagonia. Popular hikes include trails to Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Torre, and Loma del Pliegue Tumbado, offering breathtaking views of glaciers, turquoise lakes, and rugged peaks. We hiked the first two and didn’t make it to the top of Laguna Torre due to ice, sleet, snow, wind, you name it…..we made it 80% up….
