Mauna Kea is one of the most fascinating and iconic sites on the Big Island of Hawaii. It’s a dormant volcano and the tallest mountain in Hawaii when measured from its base on the ocean floor.

Mauna Kea is renowned for its observatories. Its high elevation, dry environment, and minimal light pollution make it one of the best places in the world for stargazing. Several observatories, including the Mauna Kea Observatories, host some of the world’s most advanced telescopes.
The drive up to the summit is an adventure in itself. It takes you through diverse landscapes, including lush forests, alpine meadows, and stark volcanic terrain. The road is very steep about 12% grade in places and the altitude will have an effect since you are driving up and a good pace.

We went for sunset but the stars were more amazing that we can describe. Billions and billions, so totally worth the drive. The sunset was nice, but again the stars are hard to describe. One of the most incredible sights we have ever seen.
