Moeraki Boulders, Otago Coast, New Zealand

These famous giant round rocks scattered along the beach look almost man-made, but they’re completely natural. Visiting feels a bit like walking through a sci-fi movie set — especially at sunrise when the beach is quiet.

They’re located on Koekohe Beach, near Moeraki, roughly halfway between Dunedin and Oamaru.

  • Large spherical concretions formed ~60 million years ago
  • Some up to 2 meters (6+ ft) wide
  • Many cracked open with crystal-like interiors
  • Māori legend says they’re ancient gourds/food baskets washed ashore
