Milford Sound, New Zealand

Often called the “eighth wonder of the world,” Milford Sound is the most famous fjord in Fiordland National Park and one of New Zealand’s most spectacular natural sights. Think sheer cliffs, waterfalls dropping hundreds of meters, rainforest, and wildlife — all in one dramatic landscape.

Most visitors come from

  • Queenstown – ~4 to 4.5 hr drive each way
  • Te Anau – ~2 hr drive (much better base)

The drive via Milford Road (State Highway 94) is part of the experience — waterfalls, alpine valleys, and short walks along the way.

👉 If possible, stay in Te Anau the night before to avoid a very long day. We stayed in Te Anau and did both Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound from here.

One thing to find is the swing just a short walk from the main parking lot.

After the 90 minute cruise on the sound, we hiked the Key Summit track which is on the way back toward Te Anau. The hike was longer than we thought and a little more difficult. We actually didn’t make it to the Key summit, but saw another smaller lake instead.
