Medellin

The walking tour we took in Medellín stands out as one of the most profound experiences we’ve had, despite having been on many others. Our guide spoke softly, occasionally overcome with emotion when discussing the city’s tumultuous history of violence, drug trafficking, and the notorious figure, Pablo Escobar. She pointed out a stark reality: nearly everyone in the square had been affected by Escobar’s actions, either directly or through a friend or relative.

Despite these poignant moments, we found Medellín to be a city where we felt safe and thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Poblado. This neighborhood impressed us with its comfortable accommodations, fantastic dining options, and vibrant nightlife.

During our visit, we embarked on two unforgettable day trips. One took us to Guatapé, where we conquered the Penon Rock via a challenging ascent of more than 700 steps. The next day, we explored Comuna 13, initially taking a gondola tour that provided a unique perspective on this area’s transformation from a hub of violence involving paramilitary groups, guerrillas, and gangs. The addition of escalators and moving sidewalks made navigating its steep hills much easier, enhancing our exploration of this resilient community.

Of course, we also immersed ourselves in the cultural richness of Medellín, including the renowned Botero Sculptures. Each experience deepened our appreciation for this vibrant Colombian city, leaving us with lasting memories of its history, resilience, and warmth.
