40 years later and still the most memorable, remarkable day I have spent traveling. We were staying in West Berlin 4 years before the wall came down. We crossed over at checkpoint Charlie and were told we had to check back in when we returned or they would come looking for us. As you can see below, the graffiti on the wall is from the West side, while on the East side you could not get close. We spent time at supermarkets and department stores in hopes to see how the people lived. It was scary and well worth it.
