Medicine Lake, Alberta, Canada

Medicine Lake is a unique lake in Jasper National Park, located along the scenic road between Jasper and Maligne Lake. It’s famous not just for its mountain scenery, but for a remarkable geological phenomenon.

Medicine Lake is often called the “disappearing lake.” During the summer, snowmelt fills the basin, creating a large lake. In autumn and winter, much of the water drains through a network of underground limestone caves and sinkholes, causing the lake level to drop dramatically—or nearly disappear in some years.
