Canyonlands National Park, Islands In The Sky, Utah

Island in the Sky is the most accessible and popular district of Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah. It’s basically a massive mesa (a high, flat plateau) sitting about 1,000 feet above the surrounding desert—so you get huge, wide-open views with minimal hiking.

  • Epic overlooks: You’re looking down at a maze of canyons carved by the Colorado River and Green River
  • Easy access: Many of the best viewpoints are right next to parking areas
  • “Grand Canyon vibes” without the crowds

Mesa Arch – Famous sunrise arch framing the canyon below, 0.5 miles round trip hike.

  • Grand View Point – One of the best panoramic views in the park, ~2 miles round trip hike.
  • Green River Overlook – Classic sunset spot and great photo spots.

  • Upheaval Dome – Short hikes to a mysterious crater-like formation
