Laid-back, scenic, and less hectic than Queenstown, Wānaka is one of the South Island’s best all-around bases for hiking, lake time, and mountain views. It’s relaxed but still has great food, cafés, and outdoor activities year-round.
Here you will find the famous tree growing from the lake which makes a great photo stop, Wanaka is also the starting point for some great hikes, some of which are very difficult. We came here for an afternoon trip from Queenstown.
