Nairobi, the capital and largest city of Kenya is a tale of two cities. There is a beautiful upper class area and some of the worst slums in the world. There is also a sizable middle class area. This post will highlight the city sights and the nicer areas. For the slum, please see our post on Kibera, Nairobi.

Nairobi was Founded in 1899 (as a rail depot for the Uganda Railway). It has been the Capital since: 1907 (British East Africa), 1963 (Republic of Kenya). About 5 million people live there and it is almost 6000 feet above sea level.

We took an Uber to the Landmark Hotel for dinner and drinks at the Hero Bar. This bar is listed as part of the world’s top 50 list and it did not disappoint. The area was very upscale, with nice hotels, a mall and restaurants. We didn’t spend much time here, but it was apparent, this is where the wealthy of Nairobi live. This area is called the Westlands.
