Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a small but remarkable national park in southwestern Uganda, located in the Virunga Mountains at the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which includes Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in DRC. As you can see, we were so close.

It’s one of only two places in Uganda where you can track endangered mountain gorillas (the other is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park). The Nyakagezi gorilla family is the main habituated group here.

This was a very difficult hike. We went uphill and searched, following the trackers for about 2 1/2 hours. The route back was shorter but much more difficult, as we went down thru the jungle. Often not knowing where we were stepping.

While the forest is less dense than Bwindi, the volcano hikes (Muhabura, Sabyinyo, Gahinga) can be extremely strenuous due to high elevation (summits over 3,400m/11,000ft).

Watch as the silverback walks just past Wendy…..
We stayed at the Lake Mulehe Safari Lodge…..
