Lake Atitlan

Lake Atitlán is a stunning volcanic lake located in the Guatemalan Highlands of the Sierra Madre mountain range. It is often referred to as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world due to its scenic beauty and cultural significance

Lake Atitlán is situated in the western highlands of Guatemala, approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Antigua Guatemala and about 150 kilometers (90 miles) northwest of Guatemala City.

The lake is volcanic in origin and is surrounded by three towering volcanoes: Volcán San Pedro, Volcán Atitlán, and Volcán Tolimán. These volcanoes, along with the lake itself, create a dramatic and picturesque landscape.

The area around Lake Atitlán is home to several indigenous Mayan communities, including the Tz’utujil and Kaqchikel people. Each village around the lake has its own unique culture, traditions, and crafts, which adds to the cultural richness of the region. We took a boat tour and visited a few small towns with great art and fun streets.

We also did a hike that took us to some older Mayan villages.
