Athens, the capital of Greece, is a city rich in history, culture, and modern vibrancy. We have been here 3 times and each time was mostly to get to the islands. We love the Greek Islands, but the only city we have seen on the mainland is Athens. Athens gets a bad rap sometimes. It can get dirty, crowded and hot. I think if you haven’t been here, you need to see the city for it’s history. I also think you can see almost everything in under 2 days.

Ancient Athens: Known as the cradle of Western civilization, Athens boasts numerous ancient landmarks. The Acropolis, with the Parthenon, is the most famous, showcasing classical Greek architecture and history.

We loved the Plaka District which is a picturesque neighborhood filled with narrow streets, traditional tavernas, and shops selling local crafts. Also the best Gyro we ever had thanks to Andrew Zimmern. Bairaktaris Taverna was worth the trip. https://andrewzimmern.com/the-best-gyro-souvlaki-in-athens/
