Nimes

Nimes is a historic city in the Occitanie region of southern France, known for its well-preserved Roman architecture and rich cultural heritage. Often referred to as the “French Rome,” NĂ®mes offers a fascinating blend of ancient history and vibrant modern life.

We were here on a rainly day and only spent a little time in town, but certainly could be on a future trip.

  • Ancient Arena: One of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in France, it was built in the 1st century AD. It once hosted gladiatorial games and can now be visited for guided tours and events. The amphitheater is still used for concerts and performances.
